Vorsól skín, en vetrarþung er sorg.
Sú vissa döpur gisti hugans borg,
að fallinn væri stofn, svo stæltur, beinn,
er studdi veika, máttugur og hreinn.

Við syrgjum vökumann og sálnavörð,
er sigurglaður flutti þakkargjörð.
Við hjörtun gat hann mælt af þýðum hreim
og huggað þá, er bölið sótti heim.

Hvar er viðmót þitt, svo glatt og blítt,
og hvar er handtak þitt,
svo traust og hlýtt?
- að þér horfnum ríkir auðn og róm.
Við eigi skiljum þungan skapadóm.

Mér er sem heyri ég hófatak á grund
og hlegið létt við glaðan vinafund
þar hestsins flipi er strokinn
hlýrri hönd.
Þar hamingjan á aftur ríki og lönd

En, vökumaður, vært þú sefur nú.
- Verk þín lifa og lýsa
af ást og trú
á landið, fólkið, dýra Dalabyggð.
